Dusk Over the Palouse — Steptoe Butte, Washington, USA

from $200.00
Limit 2 per order

Product Description:

Steptoe Butte rises alone from the Palouse like a watchtower, and at dusk it earns that description completely. From its summit, the rolling hills spread in every direction as far as the eye can reach — wave after wave of farmland dissolving into the failing light, the horizon soft and indefinite, the whole landscape settling into the quiet of evening.

I made this image during that suspended moment between day and night, when the last warmth of the sun was still catching the distant hills in amber and the sky above was already deepening toward purple. The wind turbines that punctuate the landscape stood in silhouette against the fading light — not intrusions on the natural scene but part of it, their slow turning a kind of punctuation in an otherwise still and ancient landscape. There is something in that combination — the organic curves of the Palouse hills against the clean geometry of the turbines — that feels entirely of this moment in history. A landscape that has been farmed for generations, quietly accommodating the future.

The colours in this image do not shout. They shift — warm to cool, orange to violet, light to shadow — in the unhurried way that only dusk allows. It is a print that changes with the light in a room, offering something different in the morning than it does in the evening. Those who live with it tend to notice things in it for months after it goes on the wall.
