Lapland in February is not a place for the faint-hearted. The temperature drops to -29° Celsius and below. The landscape disappears under a blanket of frost, snow, and ice so complete that the world seems to have been reduced to white and silence. The light, when it comes, is low and brief and extraordinary — the kind of light that photographers spend careers chasing.
This is the book that came from two weeks in that world.
-29° Celsius is a collection of over 40 exhibit-quality landscape photographs made in the Finnish wilderness during the coldest days of the Lapland winter. Frozen streams, snow-laden forests, frost-covered trees that look like they have been carved from crystal, remote cabins half-buried in drifts, and skies that shift from the deep blue of an arctic noon to the burning colours of a sub-zero sunset. Each image was made on foot, in ankle-deep snow, in temperatures that made every breath visible and every minute outside a negotiation with the cold.
The photographs do not simply document Lapland. They attempt something more difficult — to share the sensory experience of standing there. The clean cold air, the absolute quiet, the particular quality of winter light on snow that no other landscape on earth quite replicates. Whether they succeed is, as Kamal writes in the book, a question only the viewer can answer.
