Postcards from Vermont - Sleepy Hollow Farm2
There are places that have been photographed a thousand times and still manage to surprise you when you stand in front of them. Sleepy Hollow Farm in Pomfret, Vermont is one of those places. No matter how many times you have seen it in a calendar or on a postcard, arriving at the rise above it and looking down at that old timber barn sitting in its hollow — the winding road curving past the farm pond, the purple-leafed tree reflected in the still water, the rusted corrugated roof that has been exactly that colour for longer than anyone can remember — stops you every time.
What makes this composition work is the layering. The autumn maple branches reach into the frame from the upper left, framing the scene the way a painting is framed — deliberately, naturally, as though the tree knew what it was doing. The winding gravel road enters from the lower right and leads the eye in a long curve past the pond and up to the barn, inviting you into the scene rather than simply showing it to you. The farm pond catches the reflection of the old timber walls and the purple tree beside it, adding depth and stillness to a scene already full of both. And behind the barn, the hillside meadow rises to the tree line, the colours just beginning their turn from the greens of summer to the golds and browns of the season ahead.
Sleepy Hollow Farm has been standing in this valley since the 18th century. It has weathered everything Vermont can offer and remained exactly itself. This image captures it at the precise moment when autumn is arriving and the farm is, as it always is, entirely unimpressed — simply going about the quiet business of existing beautifully in a landscape that suits it perfectly.
