Postcards from Vermont 1
Some images arrive fully formed. You raise the camera, you see the frame, and you know before you press the shutter that this is the one. This was one of those images.
The road begins at your feet — scattered with the first fallen leaves of the season, red and amber and orange against the grey gravel — and winds its way up through the frame in a long, unhurried curve toward the farmstead sitting quietly at the top of the rise. The old timber barn with its rusted corrugated roof, the white clapboard farmhouse, the red outbuilding just visible behind the trees — they have the settled, unassuming quality of buildings that have never needed to announce themselves. They simply belong here, in this valley, in this particular bend of this particular road, in the way that only very old things in very old landscapes do.
The autumn maple branches reach into the frame from above, framing the scene as naturally as if they had been placed there. The hillside behind is a full palette of the season — green giving way to gold giving way to orange giving way to the deep red that only comes in the last days before the leaves fall entirely. And at your feet, the road is already covered in what the trees above have let go.
This is Vermont as it exists in the imagination of everyone who has never been there — and as it actually exists, in a handful of valleys, for a handful of days each year, for those patient enough to find it. It is the single most requested image from the New England collection, and it is not difficult to understand why.
