Nestled in Colour — Vermont, New England

from $200.00
Limit 2 per order

There is a week, sometimes less, when Vermont loses all restraint. The hillsides that spent the entire summer in quiet, uniform green suddenly ignite — red, orange, gold, amber, the occasional stubborn patch of green holding out against the season. Drive any back road in that window and you will understand immediately why people plan trips around it, why photographers return year after year, why New England autumn has become one of the most photographed seasons on earth.

And then you round a corner and find a scene like this — and you stop the car.

The red barn sits in a natural clearing in the hillside, so perfectly placed it might have been positioned by a set designer. The green of the meadow in the foreground and the still water of the small pond anchor the composition in calm, while behind and around the barn the forest has simply let go — every tree a different shade of the season, the colours climbing the hillside in layers from gold at the edges to deep burnt orange and red at the crown. The barn's roof and walls, that particular shade of New England red that seems to exist nowhere else, sit in the centre of all this colour not as a contrast to it but as part of it. As though the whole scene was arranged around that single point of red.

This is one of the most joyful images in the collection. It asks nothing of the viewer except to look — and to feel, however briefly, the particular happiness of a world that colours itself this extravagantly once a year just because it can.
